Concrete Cover Depth Verification Guide
Accurate concrete cover measurement per BS 1881-204 and IS 456 / ACI 318 is critical to prevent moisture ingress, premature steel corrosion, and structural carbonation degradation.
| Structural Element | Nominal Minimum Cover | Scanning Precision Mandate | Core Risk without Covermeter |
|---|---|---|---|
| RCC Slabs & Roofs | 15 mm – 25 mm | ±1 mm (BS 1881-204) | Insufficient cover leads to rapid bottom spalling and rust staining. |
| Beams & Girders | 25 mm – 40 mm | ±1 mm to ±2 mm | Drilling anchor bolts collides with main longitudinal reinforcement. |
| Columns & Piers | 40 mm – 50 mm | ±2 mm | Stirrup spacing errors compromise seismic confinement capacity. |
| Footings & Retaining Walls | 50 mm – 75 mm | ±3 mm | Aggressive soil chemical salts rapidly corrode unverified foundation steel. |
Field Scanning Methodologies & Core Drilling Safety
Prior to destructive core extraction, anchor drilling, or structural rehabilitation, scanning is conducted via three standardized methods:
1. Spot Locator Mode
Instant single-point detection to mark the exact center axis of rebar before drilling holes, completely avoiding cutting structural reinforcement.
2. Profile Line Scan
Continuous linear scan over meters of beam or column length, charting varying cover depth fluctuations and stirrup bar pitch distances.
3. Grid Area Scan (2D/3D)
Dense orthogonal mesh scanning across slab panels to map reinforcement density, lap positions, and double-mat reinforcement depth.
