Concrete Quality Grading via Pulse Velocity
Criterion for concrete quality grading based on ultrasonic pulse velocity per IS 13311 (Part 1): 1992 (Reaffirmed 2018) Table 2 for structural concrete members.
| Sl. No. | Pulse Velocity (km/second) | Concrete Quality Grading | Typical Structural Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Above 4.5 km/s (> 4500 m/s) | Excellent | High-density dense matrix, virtually free of voids, cracks, or honeycombing. |
| 2 | 3.5 to 4.5 km/s (3500 – 4500 m/s) | Good | Standard structural concrete meeting design specifications with sound consolidation. |
| 3 | 3.0 to 3.5 km/s (3000 – 3500 m/s) | Medium | Moderate quality, potential slight porosity, low compaction, or micro-cracking. |
| 4 | Below 3.0 km/s (< 3000 m/s) | Doubtful | Significant internal honeycombs, large voids, delamination, or severe damage. |
UPV Transducer Arrangement & Transmission Arrangements
Ultrasonic pulse velocity is calculated as V = L / T, where L is the path length between transducers and T is the transit time. Depending on site access, three transducer arrangements are utilized:
1. Direct Transmission
Transducers on opposite parallel surfaces. Maximum pulse energy transmission; highest diagnostic accuracy for columns, beams, and slabs.
2. Semi-Direct Transmission
Transducers placed on adjacent perpendicular surfaces (e.g. beam corners). Excellent when only corner access is accessible.
3. Indirect / Surface Transmission
Both transducers on the same surface. Used for pavement slabs, retaining walls, and determining depth of surface cracks.
